Smoked Old Fashioned Recipe Using a Cocktail Smoker

Smoked cocktail recipes have been part of any decent bartender’s tool kit for many years. However just because it is old, doesn’t make it old fashioned! When done right, it can be truly delicious.

Which Flavour Wood Chips for The Smoked Old Fashioned Cocktail Recipe?
There are a variety of woodchips you could use with this recipe. Traditionally, with a scotch whiskey, it would be oak, however we enjoy hickory. It is fun (and delicious) testing a variety of woodchips for each drink. It takes home mixology to the next level.
The method of smoking a cocktail essentially transforms the flavour. It is important to note that adding smoke is not simply about the visual appeal but is another component of the drink’s ingredients.

The Smoked Old Fashioned Cocktail Ingredients
- 60 ml straight rye or bourbon whiskey
- 1 sugar cube
- 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters (or mix it up and use chocolate bitters)
- ice
- twist of orange peel (garnish)
- Cherry (garnish)
- Hickory woodchips
Smoked Old Fashioned Cocktail Method
- Place the sugar cube in a glass and soak the cube in bitters. Muddle the sugar cube to dissolve.
- Add the whiskey and ice and stir.
- Strain the drink into a wine glass and add ice.
- Now for the best part. Add woodchips to the Sixpence Alchemy cocktail smoker. try hickory woodchips. Fill the glass with smoke and cover with a lid or simply use a coaster.
- Leave for one minute.
- Activate the orange peel by lighting it.
- Remove cover coaster, garnish with orange peel and cherry and serve.
Optional Recipe Variation: smoke the dissolved sugar. Place cocktail smoker hose in the glass - above the sugar - light the chamber and fill the glass with wood smoke. Cover and leave to infuse while you make the rest of the Old Fashioned Cocktail.
