Smoked Amaretto Sour Cocktail

Smoked Amaretto Sour Cocktail in a rocks glass with a lemon wheel as garnish, on a bar

A twist on the Whiskey Sour, the smoked Amaretto Sour cocktail makes things a little nuttier (and smokier). In time for Valentine's day, this cocktail is the perfect accompaniment to a romantic tiramisu dessert (as Amaretto is often used).

The recipe below is for one - but if romance is in the air... double the ingredients.  please note: more than double won't fit into the cocktail shaker, so stick with two drinks at a time.

Smoked Amaretto Sour Cocktail Ingredients

  • 1 egg white, whisked
  • 45ml bourbon
  • 20ml Amaretto liqueur
  • 20ml fresh lemon juice
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Hickory wood chips for the smoke infusion (or try any flavour wood chip you like - it's always fun to experiment)
  • Lemon wheel to garnish

Smoked Amaretto Cocktail Method

  • Place all ingredients into a cocktail shaker and fill with ice
  • Shake well until the outside of the shaker feels cold
  • Remove cocktail shaker lid and cover with Sixpence Alchemy hardwood cocktail smoker
  • Add a pinch of hickory wood to the smoker's chamber and light for 5 to 10 seconds
  • Allow smoke to infuse for 30 seconds or so
  • Remove smoke top and strain cocktail into a rocks glass
  • Garnish with a lemon wheel
  • And lastly and most importantly - ENJOY!

 Fun Fact

Amaretto, the main attraction here, is an Italian liqueur that's typically made with apricot kernels or peach stones, giving it a slightly bitter, nutty flavour that's sweetened with sugar. Its name, which means "a little bitter" in Italian, hints at its distinctive taste. Some brands also add in sweet almonds and spice it up with flavours like allspice or cardamom, brown sugar, or even a caramel-like syrup.
